A Journey Back In Time To 1854

Last week we went to Sovereign Hill. It was really fun. We participated in a School Program and became students of St. Alipius Diggings School. While we were part of the program we had to wear costumes and unfortunately that meant that I had to wear a dress.

During the program I learnt that girls would leave school at the end of Year 5, while boys stay until the end of Year 6 and get a job after leaving school. Another thing I learnt was that  girls often wouldn’t go to school because they would be engaged at 12, married at 15 and having their first child at 17 or 18.

My favourite part of the School Program was when we had ‘morning air, lunch air and afternoon air’. I also liked when we were taught how to pan for gold. We found lots of gold as a class and sometimes we would find larger flakes as well.

Throughout the program I used many PLA’s including:

  • Courage
  • Curiosity
  • Collaboration

I showed Courage when I had to wear the dress, even though I didn’t want to. I showed Curiosity throughout the entire program because I was interested in what we were doing. I showed Collaboration for all of the program because we had to work together as a class for all of the program.

I would enhance the program by having different people be looking to employ you instead of just having Mrs/Mr Jones (from the Critirian Store) and Mrs/Mr Brown (from the Lollie Shop)

Have you ever been to Sovereign Hill? If so, what was your favourite part?
