A Journey Back In Time To 1854

Last week we went to Sovereign Hill. It was really fun. We participated in a School Program and became students of St. Alipius Diggings School. While we were part of the program we had to wear costumes and unfortunately that meant that I had to wear a dress.

During the program I learnt that girls would leave school at the end of Year 5, while boys stay until the end of Year 6 and get a job after leaving school. Another thing I learnt was that  girls often wouldn’t go to school because they would be engaged at 12, married at 15 and having their first child at 17 or 18.

My favourite part of the School Program was when we had ‘morning air, lunch air and afternoon air’. I also liked when we were taught how to pan for gold. We found lots of gold as a class and sometimes we would find larger flakes as well.

Throughout the program I used many PLA’s including:

  • Courage
  • Curiosity
  • Collaboration

I showed Courage when I had to wear the dress, even though I didn’t want to. I showed Curiosity throughout the entire program because I was interested in what we were doing. I showed Collaboration for all of the program because we had to work together as a class for all of the program.

I would enhance the program by having different people be looking to employ you instead of just having Mrs/Mr Jones (from the Critirian Store) and Mrs/Mr Brown (from the Lollie Shop)

Have you ever been to Sovereign Hill? If so, what was your favourite part?

Year 5 Market

Last week we had our Year 5 Market. Our group made $440.85. It was lots of fun!

During the market I met Paula Mahoney, James Macready Bryan and James’ Mum. All of Year 5 had to write a letter to someone to come to our market. I wrote to Paula and Leila wrote to James and his Mum. All of them came and it was an amazing experience.

There were lots of stalls and everyone enjoyed themselves. Almost everyone sold out of their products. During lunch we had some tables set up outside Metcalfe Hall and each group could sell their leftover products.

During the day many Positive Learner Attributes were used. Our group mainly used Communication, Collaboration, Connectedness and Reflection. We used Communication all throughout the day. We had to Collaborate when people from our group wanted to have a break. We showed Connectedness by all working together as a team. At the end of the day we had to Reflect on what went well and what we would improve.

My advice to the Year 4’s would be to make sure you spread your time evenly over all of your products, don’t focus mainly on one product. Another bit of advice I would give to the Year 4’s would be to make sure your ideas are realistic with the money and time you have.

If I could redo the market I would make sure not to put as much stock out for each year level and make people pay the real price instead of just half of the price.

Some challenges we faced were:

  • The Year 6’s didn’t buy much from our stall, only a couple bought something. They mainly played our game
  • Some of our stress balls popped
  • There wasn’t much stock left when the Year 6’s came to the market

Carey Celebrates Literature

Two weeks ago was CCL. We had an author come to visit us. Our author was Mark Wilson. There was also a lunch time carnival when we got to perform our poems. There were lots of activities at the carnival. There was also a cupcake afternoon tea and Leigh Hobbs talk. I introduced Leigh Hobbs. We made our own blackout poetry.

My favourite activity at the carnival was badge making because you could make whatever kind of badge you wanted. The badges were also very quick to be made. I got an Old Tom badge. I didn’t get to do many activities because I was part of the CCL committee. Our group ran the Treasure Hunt.

I learnt lots of things from Mark Wilson. Something interesting I learnt was that Mark Wilson has written seventeen books in nine different languages. Mark Wilson also gets paid $250 for every black and white drawing. He also gets $1000 for every front cover.

At the Leigh Hobbs afternoon tea we learnt how to draw Mr Chicken, Old Tom and Horrible Harriet. When he explained how to draw them he would sing it and everyone would do the same. I had to introduce Leigh Hobbs.

What did you learn from Mark Wilson?

Year Five Market

Only six days until the market! Last week we made print ads to put up around the school. Every group was allowed to put up two posters.

We have been learning different forms of persuasive writing. There are many forms of persuasive writing such as:

  • A normal persuasive text
  • A persuasive letter
  • A print ad
  • A video ad

What type of persuasive writing do you think is the best? Why?

My First Term In Year 5

My first term in 5S at Carey has been awesome!

There have been so many highlights, I couldn’t list them all.  I have enjoyed doing all our A.P.S. sport. We have done Bike Ed, Swim Intensive, our Triathlons and Rock Climbing. We have started our Year 5 Market planning and had our Swimming Carnival, which I really enjoyed even though Arnold came 7th.

I have learnt how to multiply and divide fractions and decimals. In Spelling Mastery I have learnt what morphographs are and how to spell ‘conscientious’. I can speak a bit in Chinese, which is an improvement because at the start of the year I could only say ‘Ni Hao’.

Next term my goal is to get into ‘Los Bandidos’ and Maths Extension.

I think I have used curiosity, communication, courage, knowledge and imagination this term.

Overall this term has been pretty good and I have really enjoyed everything.

First Term Of Our Amazing Library!

My favourite genre to read is the Mystery section because I find the books very interesting and I love trying to work out who the criminal or murderer is. My favourite mystery series is the Murder Most Unladylike books because the books are gripping and they take me ages to work out who was the murderer.

I have enjoyed reading The War I Finally Won as a Book Chat book because the author used show don’t tell and it was very action packed. I gave it to my parents to read and I only just started reading the second one even though I have had it for two weeks.

What do you like about our library?

My First Month In Year 5

My first month in year five has been amazing!

I have memorised a deck of cards, attempted to juggle, and enjoyed participating in all our A.P.S activities.

In Spelling Mastery I have improved in my spelling so much. We also had our first cold writing task.

We have individual maths groups so we can advance at our own level work with peers around the same level as us.

In 5S we are reading a book called Out of My Mind by Sharon M Draper. It is a about a girl called Melody who can’t talk or walk.

It has been a big jump from my old school to Carey, but everyone has been really kind, so I found it easy to settle in.
